K-9’s, each partnered with a specific officer, are certified in building searches, area searches, tracking, crowd control, off leash apprehensions and articles searches.
On March 1st, 2013 K-9 “Aldo” joined the department partnered with Ofc. Covert. He is a 2 year old German Shepherd from the Czech Republic. He was purchased from Azzi International. Aldo’s training consisted of Obedience, Tracking, Criminal Apprehension, Narcotics Detection, Building Search, Area Search, Article Search and Crowd Control.
He has a very friendly personality, but knows when its time to go to work.
K-9 “Champ” was imported from Germany and is partnered with Sgt. John Colella. Champ started on the New Castle Police Dept. in January of 2012 and his age is three years old. Champ is a German Shepard and is a dual purpose K-9. He is certified through AMERICAN WORKING DOG ASSOCIATION, The K-9 is certified to locate MARIJUANA, COCAINE, HEROIN, METHAMPHETIMENES due to the increase in prescription drug abuse all narcotic K-9’s on the dept. also are trained to indicate on ROXICODONE. K-9 CHAMP along with the other K-9’s are also trained in assisting patrol in the apprehension of dangers offenders.
In the 2012 calendar year K-9 Champ was responsible for taking three hand guns off the street, in three separate incidents fleeing suspects discarded loaded weapons which later could have been located by children. The K-9’s are active in the community in bridging the public with the police dept. one of those ways is having K-9 demonstrations(if interested in having a K-9 demonstration please contacted Sgt. The K9’s are used on a regular bases during the school year on narcotic searches of the students lockers and vehicles to help keep dangerous narcotics out of the schools, not only in New Castle but also in surrounding districts and Counties.
K9 “Diesel” is a German Shepherd that was born in Hungary on June 10, 2010. Diesel weighs 75lbs. Diesel was trained at Bullocks K9 North. Diesel is certified through American Working Dog Association as a dual purpose narcotics detection / patrol K9. Diesel is trained in narcotics detection, obedience, crowd control, building searches, area searches, article searches, bite work and tracking. K9 Diesel also enjoys playing ball with his handler Patrolman John Charmo. K9 Diesel has been on duty with the NCPD since July 2012.
K-9 “Eduardus”, or Dus for short, is a Belgian Malinois who was bred in the Netherlands. His name means “The Guardian”. He was imported to Tri-State Canine Services in Warren, OH where he was selected from a group of dogs. Dus and his officer, Cpl. Brooks, had a bonding period of about a week and then trained together for 4 weeks.
Dus is certified through the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy in narcotics detection, tracking/article searches, and apprehensions (bite work). He frequently assists the Lawrence County Drug Task Force and the New Castle Police Special Response Team on raids. He also participates in many programs for local schools and organizations.
K-9 Bojar is a German Shepard born in Germany on August 24, 2011 and is certified through the North American Working Dog Association. Partnered with Sgt. Bucker, Bojar is used as an Explosive detection and patrol K-9. Bojar’s is utilized also for building searches, article searches, tracking, crowd control and criminal apprehension.
Bojar is utilized in 13 Counties in Western Pennsylvania for Explosive detection. Bojar’s favorite activity is playing fetch.
